Before you leave the house

  1. 1Phone the hospital and describe what happened, when it started, and your pet’s breathing. They will tell you whether to come in and what to do on the way.
  2. 2Bring any packaging, plant, or medication involved if you suspect poisoning. The exact product matters more than the symptoms.
  3. 3Carry cats and small animals in a secure carrier, and muzzle a dog in pain only if it is still breathing comfortably.
  4. 4Take a note of medications your pet is on, and the name of your regular vet so records can be requested.
